Court proceedings are not always the most effective way to resolve family disputes.
Mediation and other forms of non-court dispute resolution can often provide quicker, more cost-effective and less confrontational solutions.
Our family law team supports clients through family mediation, arbitration and negotiated settlements, helping them reach agreements concerning finances, children and property matters. By promoting constructive dialogue and practical problem-solving, we help families find lasting resolutions while preserving important relationships wherever possible.
We advise on:
Once you reach an agreement about money and property, we can make it legally binding with a consent order.
If you cannot agree where your children will live or the time they spend with each parent, we can help you reach an arrangement or apply to court.
What is a MIAM?
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a meeting with a mediator to find out whether mediation could work for you. In most cases, you must attend a MIAM before applying to court about children or finances, unless an exemption applies, for example where there has been domestic abuse.
Is an agreement reached in mediation legally binding?
Not on its own. An agreement about finances can be made legally binding by turning it into a consent order approved by the court. We can draft this for you.
What is the difference between mediation and arbitration?
In mediation, a neutral mediator helps you reach your own agreement. In arbitration, you choose a qualified arbitrator who hears both sides and makes a decision that you agree to be bound by. It is usually quicker and more private than going to court.
